Vermilion police are investigating a shooting that damaged a home in the Brownhelm Station Road area early Wednesday morning, July 23, shortly before 4 a.m.
The first reports of gunfire came in around 3:25 a.m. from multiple callers in the Indian Ridge Estates and Highbridge Road area. Officers searched the neighborhood for about 25 minutes but were unable to locate any evidence at that time.
About 40 minutes later, a resident on Brownhelm Station Road called to report her house had been hit. Responding officers found five bullet impacts: two in the roof, two in the front of the house, and one in a tree near the porch. A spent 5.56mm rifle casing was recovered near the roadway by the mailbox. The casing was marked “LC 25,” identifying it as Lake City-manufactured NATO ammunition from 2025.
Inside the house, one round traveled through a bedroom, into a nursery, and lodged in a wall. Another round entered through a window frame, fragmented, and struck several hanging picture frames in a four-seasons room. Officers also recovered a bullet fragment from wood paneling and removed a lodged round from an interior wall.
The resident reported waking to a loud noise and a visible spark in her bedroom. She took cover on the floor and crawled to the front porch but did not see anyone or hear a vehicle. One neighbor nearby reported hearing shots and what may have been a vehicle leaving the area, but no description or direction of travel was available.
Sgt. Holmes processed the scene and documented all damage and recovered evidence. The shooting likely occurred between 3:25 and 4:00 a.m. No injuries were reported.
