A Vermilion resident is cautioning neighbors after a suspicious encounter with a man claiming to represent Mira Home Pest Control. The incident, which took place at the resident’s home in the city, was reported to the Vermilion Police Department and is now under review. Police Chief Chris Hartung confirmed to the Vermilion Daily that the department is actively attempting to identify and locate the man involved.
According to the resident, the individual approached her doorstep and initiated a conversation under the pretense of discussing pest control services. They stated that she never signed up for such services and was confused when he began referencing her property and claiming she had agreed to a “trial.” Screenshots provided by the resident showed a series of texts in which the man asked for her personal information and pressed her to confirm an appointment, despite her repeated objections.
The resident provided screenshots showing that the man identified himself as “Boston Dastrup,” claimed to be with Mira Home Pest Control, and said his company had recently purchased Terminix. The resident told him she had not signed up for any services, and later grew concerned that the man may have misrepresented himself or his intentions. Terminix and Mira Home Pest Control do not appear to be affiliated, and no public record confirms any such acquisition.
After verifying the story and obtaining confirmation from authorities, the Vermilion Daily reviewed online reports about Mira Home Pest Control. Public listings associated with the company show several addresses across Ohio and Utah. While the Better Business Bureau does list the company as active, public reviews are mixed.
On Facebook, several community members from Ohio have reported unusually aggressive sales tactics from door-to-door Mira Home representatives, including unsolicited visits late at night, vague or misleading claims about spiders, and inconsistent pricing strategies. Some report being approached by employees on hoverboards or Segways and claim they were pressured to hand over credit card information before any services were rendered.
To be clear, there is currently no indication that Mira Home as a company authorized any improper activity in Vermilion. However, the situation has raised concerns about the conduct of individual sales representatives, particularly those operating in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
Residents are reminded to be cautious when approached by door-to-door salespeople, especially if they request personal information, pressure for payment upfront, or claim affiliation with well-known companies without proof. Anyone with a similar experience is encouraged to contact the Vermilion Police Department at 440-967-6116.
