Vermilion’s own American Heritage Girls Troop OH4120 is quietly making a big impact in the lives of young women across Erie County and they’re ready to welcome more.
Meeting weekly at the Evangelical and Reformed Church, the troop offers a Christ-centered alternative to traditional scouting. With a curriculum rooted in faith, service, and leadership, AHG empowers girls ages 5 to 18 through hands-on experiences in STEM, fire safety, home economics, crafts, community service, and more.
“American Heritage Girls is very faith-based, but also incredibly practical,” said troop leader Julie. “We teach life skills, compassion, and community values. The girls aren’t just showing up. They’re building friendships and learning to serve.”
When the previous Vermilion troop relocated to Amherst, several parents stepped up to keep the program alive locally. Thanks to their efforts and support from local churches, Troop OH4120 was born. Today, it’s the only AHG troop in Erie County.
A Safe, Structured Environment
The troop follows a two-deep leadership model at all times. Two unrelated adult women are always present during meetings and activities, and no adult is ever alone with a child other than their own. Even restroom trips follow a buddy system, with leaders monitoring the hallway.
“We’re very protective of our girls,” said Sarah. “It’s about trust, safety, and making sure every girl feels secure and supported.”
The troop is inclusive of girls with IEPs and developmental differences. “We’ve had girls who couldn’t write yet or were non-verbal,” Julie added. “We just adjust. No one is left sitting on the sidelines.”
Parents are encouraged to participate, and older girls often mentor younger ones. “The girls watch out for each other,” said Kelly. “It’s become like a family.”
Lessons in Faith and Service
Each year, the troop follows a spiritual theme. One year’s focus on “Vision” inspired faith-based goal-setting, vision boards, and creative lessons built around guidance and clarity. Scripture-based learning is delivered through crafts, demonstrations, and interactive projects.
The girls also take part in community events like the Woollybear Parade and recently visited the Fox 8 News studios in Cleveland, where they were featured on air. Their service projects include storm cleanup, nursing home visits, and helping neighbors in need.
To fund supplies, badges, and field trips, the troop partners with local businesses for fundraising. One longtime partner is Poppin’ Around, a locally owned popcorn shop that has hosted fundraisers for several years.
“We want to help support a community that supports us,” the troop shared. “That’s why we keep our fundraising local.”

Open to All
Though AHG is a Christian program, girls of all denominations are welcome. The troop works with families of different faith traditions, including offering support for Catholic faith awards and accommodates girls with special needs.
Families are welcome to visit before registering. Trial visits are encouraged, as long as a parent remains on-site for liability purposes.
Troop OH4120 meets Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Meetings resume September 11.
