This article is based on remarks made by Vermilion head coach Bill DiFucci and Firelands head coach Ryan O’Rourke during their appearances on the Lorain County Coaches Show, produced by the Lorain County Sports Network and associated with WOBL/WDLW Radio. The program was published on the network’s official YouTube channel on August 7, 2025. All quotes and paraphrased statements are taken directly from that broadcast and have been verified for accuracy. This article focuses on those two segments.
Vermilion Sailors – Head Coach Bill DiFucci
DiFucci described how last season’s turnaround has renewed pride around the program. Vermilion’s 2024 run included the program’s first home playoff game, its first playoff victory, and the first nine-win season since 1998. Looking to 2025, DiFucci identified junior quarterback Drake Hooks as the new starter after limited varsity snaps last year and praised him as “phenomenal… a hard worker, pays attention to detail, and extremely coachable.”
Senior two-way standout Evan Kuhns and senior back Brock Myers return to steady the offense. Up front, DiFucci said sophomore Trey Colahan will be on the offensive line. He also highlighted incoming or younger contributors, including freshmen Payton and Landon Mooney, a freshman referred to on the show as “Money,” and Austin Sargent, along with sophomore linemen Trenton Garcia and Luke Richardson.
DiFucci emphasized maintaining focus after success and said he supports the revised OHSAA playoff format that features 12 qualifiers with the top four seeds receiving a first-round bye. According to the show, Vermilion opens at Margaretta, then plays Firelands in Week 2 in what is commonly called the Stillman Cup. That nickname reflects that the athletic directors at both schools are brothers. Vermilion currently competes in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
Firelands Falcons – Head Coach Ryan O’Rourke
O’Rourke, entering his ninth season, recapped a 2024 campaign that started 0–4 and finished with four wins in the last six games as a young roster gained experience. Many of those contributors are now juniors. Returning players mentioned on the show include quarterback Liam Tobicash, running back Jimmy Berry, and versatile senior Ayden Fortner, who lines up in multiple roles on offense and as an edge defender. Senior Andrew Pollock remains a big-play threat in the return game. O’Rourke also pointed to juniors Carson Lima and Preston Kirschner as anchors in the secondary.
The focus points he outlined were cutting penalties and sustaining physical play for the full 48 minutes. According to the show, Firelands will scrimmage Normandy, opens against Edison, and then hosts Vermilion in Week 2’s Stillman Cup, already being framed as an important statement game. Firelands competes in the LC8.
