Vermilion — The Vermilion Local School District Board of Education accepted the retirement of Superintendent Dr. David Hile on Monday, Sept. 8, and later appointed Wesley “Wes” Weaver as interim superintendent effective Oct. 11. Hile’s retirement takes effect Oct. 10. The board entered executive session at 6:14 p.m. and returned at 7:06 p.m. to approve Weaver’s appointment by a 4–0 vote. Members present were Mrs. Innes, Mr. Benson, Mr. Habermehl, and Mrs. Stepp.
In other action, the board approved a memorandum of understanding with OAPSE Local 322 to correct vacation pay language in Article 36 that had been intended for the contract but was omitted.
Treasurer’s report for August 2025
• General Fund revenue through August was about $9.22 million, up from roughly $9.0 million in each of the prior two years. The district did not receive public utility personal property tax from West Vermilion Power because it was paid delinquent to the county treasurer. Once received, revenue is expected to finish slightly above the historical average.
• General Fund expenditures were about $5.0 million, higher than last year largely because school buses delivered in July posted in the new fiscal year.
• Food service collected about $20,000 and spent about $128,000 through August. Officials cited higher food costs and modest wage increases and said lunch pricing may need review if balances continue declining.
• Cash on hand in the General Fund was about $13.0 million. Last year the district transferred $7.66 million to capital for major repairs, including the high school roof if the November bond levy is unsuccessful.
Donations
• $1,250 from the OHSAA Enrichment Fund to the Vermilion Athletic Fund
• Clay wedging table from John Williams to the VHS Art Department
• $800 from Cliff German to the Vermilion Athletic Fund
Transportation
The board authorized the Ohio Schools Council to advertise and receive bids for one 54-passenger handicapped school bus chassis and body, and one 12-passenger school van.
