Phishing Scam Targets Vermilion Township Officials

Vermilion Township trustees are warning residents after a recent phishing scam attempted to trick local officials into purchasing gift cards.

According to Trustee Chair Kenn Baughman, the scam involved emails or messages sent in his name, asking trustees to buy gift cards. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office was notified.

Officials emphasize that scams like this are not limited to government offices. “Everybody is a target, including government employees,” Baughman said.

Residents are urged to remain cautious: don’t reply to suspicious messages, don’t comply with requests for money or gift cards, and report scams to law enforcement.
