This article has been updated to reflect an automatic recount due to closeness of the vote totals.
VERMILION TWP. — One person can confidently claim victory in a crowded Vermilion Township race.
But the other, as it stands today, can’t.
Here’s what’s been confirmed, according to unofficial results from the Erie County Board of Elections.
On Tuesday, Don Rowe won his re-election bid, receiving more votes than any other Vermilion Township candidate in this crowded nine-person field.
Rowe obtained nearly 16.5% of the total vote. He emphasized teamwork and fiscal responsibility during his campaign, highlighting efforts to improve roads, maintain emergency services, and plan for future infrastructure needs.
Announcing the second winner, however, will need further scrutiny.
Second-place finisher Keith Sexton received 408 votes, translating to 14.98% of the total vote, standing inches above Katie Lalonde, who received 402 votes, equating to 14.76% of the total vote.
In the coming days, election officials will tally up uncounted ballots, such as provisionals. After these votes are counted, if the margin between at least two of these candidates falls within one-half of 1%, then an automatic recount will occur.
Others falling short include incumbent Joseph Trinter at 13.5%, Kurt Johnson at 12.3%, Tom Krukemeyer at 11.9%, Nancy Sauer at 6.4%, Malcolm Williams at 5.1%, and Charles Hall at 4.7%.
