VERMILION — Voters chose attorney Kenneth Lieux to serve as the next judge of the Vermilion Municipal Court, defeating attorney David Berta in Tuesday’s general election.

According to unofficial results from the Erie and Lorain County Boards of Elections, Lieux received a combined total of 3,181 votes, or about 68 percent, while Berta received 1,510 votes, or roughly 32 percent. A total of 4,691 ballots were cast in the race..

Lieux, a longtime attorney with more than four decades of courtroom experience, has served as a prosecutor, defense attorney, and acting judge. He was invited by outgoing Judge W. Zack Doylk to preside when needed, gaining firsthand experience managing Vermilion’s municipal docket.

“I believe that experience as a prosecutor, defense attorney, and acting judge uniquely prepares me to serve Vermilion residents,” Lieux said during a September candidates forum.

Berta, a former Lorain County Domestic Relations Court judge, campaigned on community-based solutions, highlighting his work establishing a juvenile mental health court recognized by the Ohio Supreme Court.

The race was held to fill the seat vacated by Judge Doylk, who is retiring after 18 years on the bench. The Vermilion Municipal Court handles criminal misdemeanors, traffic offenses, evictions, and small claims affecting residents in the Vermilion area.

Final results section (updated figures):

• Kenneth M. Lieux: 3,181 (67.8%)
• David J. Berta: 1,510 (32.2%)
