Vermilion residents gathered Tuesday morning at Exchange Park to honor the nation’s veterans and dedicate a new Gold Star Memorial stone recognizing those who gave their lives in service to the country.
The ceremony was organized and led by veterans representing numerous local veteran service organizations, with fellow service members, city officials, and community residents in attendance. The program opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the laying of a wreath and reflections on the quiet resolve, courage, and patriotism of those who serve.
Mayor Jim Forthofer noted that veterans make up only about seven percent of the nation’s population—yet their sacrifices protect the freedoms all Americans enjoy. He thanked those gathered for their service and continued contributions to the community.
The event concluded with a benediction and the formal dedication of the Gold Star Memorial stone, honoring Vermilion residents who gave their futures so others could have today. A luncheon hosted by the AMVETS followed the ceremony.
