Concerns Raised Over Site Conditions at Old Hull Property

City of Vermilion officials reported Monday that an empty underground tank has been discovered on Old Hull Street, prompting the city to notify the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The Old Hull property has been part of ongoing discussions as a possible site for future public parking, with city officials weighing whether its condition and cost would make a purchase practical.

Mayor Jim Forthofer told council that the tank appears to include materials left improperly on the property and that the city has directed those responsible to remove it. Because the tank may violate environmental rules, the EPA has been informed. The city is awaiting further guidance while monitoring cleanup.

City engineers and service staff said they are pushing for compliance and remain in contact with regulatory agencies as needed. No fines or enforcement actions have been announced at this time, but officials said the situation will be reviewed once cleanup is complete.

More updates are expected as the city receives additional information from the EPA and project contractors.
