Vermilion Secures Additional State Funding for Road and Waterline Projects

Service Director Tony Valerius reported that Vermilion has secured additional state funding to move forward with two major infrastructure projects, including a road reconstruction and a waterline replacement, following action by the Ohio Public Works Commission.

According to Valerius, the supplemental funding will support continued work on Highbridge Road Reconstruction – Phase 4 and Edgewater Boulevard Waterline Replacement – Phase 2, both part of the city’s broader effort to upgrade aging infrastructure.

Highbridge Road reconstruction

Valerius told council the Highbridge Road project will include roadway widening, full-depth asphalt replacement and drainage improvements. The work is intended to address long-standing roadway conditions while improving safety and durability along the corridor.

Phase 4 continues previous improvements made on Highbridge Road, allowing the city to extend reconstruction rather than completing the project in smaller, disconnected segments.

Edgewater Boulevard waterline replacement

The Edgewater Boulevard project involves replacing approximately 3,500 feet of aging waterline infrastructure. Valerius said the work will include removing older lines and installing new water mains, valves and hydrants.

The project is designed to improve water reliability, reduce the risk of line breaks and modernize infrastructure that has exceeded its expected service life.

Supplemental funding and project costs

Valerius reported that the Ohio Public Works Commission approved supplemental funding for both projects, helping offset a portion of total construction costs. He noted that receiving additional state funding reduces the financial burden on local resources.

Both projects were already planned, with the supplemental funding helping ensure the full scope of work can proceed without delay.

What happens next

Valerius said the projects will move into the bidding phase, after which construction schedules will be finalized. Residents near the project areas can expect additional information once contractors are selected and timelines are confirmed.

The projects are part of the city’s ongoing effort to address road conditions and water infrastructure needs while leveraging available state funding.
