VERMILION — Police are still searching for the driver who struck a utility pole early Saturday morning near Wendy’s on Liberty Avenue.

According to dispatch records, the crash occurred around 2:20 a.m. on January 11, 2026. Responding officers found a broken pole, a damaged street sign and vehicle debris, but no vehicle in the area. The pole had been split in half, knocking down wires and requiring replacement. Ohio Edison was notified, and crews were given a one-hour estimated arrival time.

Dispatch audio from the incident indicated that the pole was “on the ground” and that the striking vehicle likely sustained “pretty good damage.” The crash location was reported as Liberty Avenue at Erie Street, in front of Wendy’s.

Officers searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate any vehicle showing fresh damage. A damage report is being completed.

Vermilion Police confirmed they are still attempting to identify the driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vermilion Police Department at 440-967-6116.
