All students returned safely after a bus transporting members of the Vermilion High School ski club encountered a roadway hazard Friday evening while traveling on Interstate 90 in Lorain County.
The bus was returning to Vermilion from a trip to Peek’n Peak Ski Resort when it struck a tractor-trailer wheel and tire in the roadway, according to Wes Weaver, interim superintendent of Vermilion Local Schools.
The impact caused the bus to briefly swerve through traffic before coming to rest on the left berm. The bus sustained damage to its left-side wheels and tires.
Driver Kelly King and ski club advisor Joe Schneid promptly evacuated students from the bus. No injuries were reported.
District transportation staff coordinated a quick response. With assistance from transportation director Amber Stoler, a second bus was dispatched to the scene. Driver Jonathan Broz transported students back to Vermilion High School.
“We sincerely appreciate the expertise and care with which our teachers and transportation professionals navigate situations like this one to ensure the safety of our students,” Weaver said.
The district confirmed that all students returned safely and that no further issues were reported following the incident.
