VERMILION Twp — Vermilion Township trustees opened sealed bids Tuesday for the Stanley Road Project, receiving 13 proposals that will now be forwarded to the Erie County Engineer’s Office for review and recommendation.
The bids, read aloud by Township Administrator Kurt Johnson during the Feb. 3 regular meeting, showed a wide price spread. The apparent low bid came in at $149,578.30, while the highest exceeded $245,000.
Trustees did not award a contract during the meeting. Instead, they agreed to send the bids to the Erie County Engineer’s Office to confirm compliance with project specifications and determine the lowest responsive and responsible bidder.
During public comment, a resident asked whether the township could complete similar road work in-house, referencing other communities that reportedly save money by using their own crews for some projects.
Trustee Kenneth Baughman said the township does handle certain work internally, but for larger projects he relies on the engineer’s guidance.
“I think I’m going to trust what the engineer says we should do… I’m going to go with the engineer all the time,” Baughman said.
A recommendation is expected to return to the board before any final action is taken on the Stanley Road project.
