Columbus– Governor Mike DeWine has declared a state of emergency in eight Northeast Ohio counties following severe storms that caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and public services. The counties affected include Cuyahoga, Erie, Huron, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Summit, and Trumbull. The declaration enables state resources to be mobilized more rapidly to assist local governments in their recovery efforts.
The recent storms, which struck the region earlier this week, brought torrential rain, high winds, and widespread flooding. Numerous communities have reported power outages, fallen trees, and damaged roadways. Emergency response teams have been working around the clock to clear debris, restore power, and ensure the safety of residents.
Governor DeWine emphasized the urgency of the situation in a press statement, noting that the state of emergency will allow state agencies to coordinate with local authorities more effectively. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all Ohioans affected by these storms,” DeWine said. “We are committed to providing the necessary resources and support to help communities recover as quickly as possible.”
The Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is already on the ground, assessing the damage and determining the needs of the affected areas. The state has also activated the Ohio National Guard to assist with recovery efforts, particularly in the hardest-hit communities where local resources are stretched thin.
Residents in the affected counties are urged to remain vigilant, follow the guidance of local authorities, and report any damage to their property. The Ohio EMA has set up a hotline for residents to call for assistance and information about available resources.
While the state of emergency is a critical step in the recovery process, it also opens the door for potential federal aid. State officials are currently evaluating whether the extent of the damage warrants a request for federal disaster relief funds.
As recovery efforts continue, local governments and residents alike are bracing for the possibility of additional storms in the forecast. Governor DeWine has called for patience and resilience, urging Ohioans to stay informed and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.
