Awards support parks, arts restoration

VERMILION — Projects involving two city parks and the Harbourtown Fine Arts Center have received more than $200,000 in grant funding, Mayor Russ Owens announced during the July 20 Vermilion City Council meeting.
Owens said the city received three Erie County grants for projects at Sherod Park and Main Street Beach. The Harbourtown Fine Arts Center building restoration project also received what Owens described as significant funding.
Together, the awards to the city and Harbourtown exceeded $200,000, according to the mayor’s report.
Owens credited Erie County for supporting the projects and thanked council members for holding a special meeting and suspending their rules to approve resolutions needed to secure the funding.
Government agencies do not always provide cities with much time to act before grant deadlines, Owens said. He added that the administration was not trying to circumvent council’s procedures when requesting quicker action.
“The bottom line is Harbourtown and our City were awarded over $200,000 because of such,” Owens said in his submitted report.
The meeting minutes did not provide a breakdown of the individual grant amounts, the precise work planned at each location or anticipated project timelines.
