VERMILION — New restroom facilities have been delivered at Sherod Park, bringing a long-awaited public amenity closer to completion after more than a year of planning, grant coordination and city approval.
The project, formally known as the Sherod Park Comfort Station, was made possible through an $85,000 Erie County community investment grant awarded to the City of Vermilion. As part of that award, the city provided a required $20,000 local match through its Parks Capital Levy.
Grant funding and city share
The county grant covered the bulk of the project cost, while the city’s share was funded through levy dollars already designated for park improvements.
In 2025, Vermilion City Council approved a contract with Norwalk Concrete Industries for the purchase and partial installation of the prefabricated restroom unit in an amount not to exceed $77,460.
Delivered, but not yet open
The restroom structure was recently delivered and set in place at Sherod Park near the parking lot and playground area.
According to Vermilion City Council President Jeff Lucas, the restrooms are not yet operational. Lucas said over the weekend that a final concrete pour was scheduled for this week.
Based on that timeline, the facility appears to be nearing completion, with final site work still pending before it can open to the public.

Project delays and timeline
The project had been in development since 2024 and experienced delays tied to a production backlog involving the vendor supplying the prefabricated building.
Erie County commissioners later approved a timeline extension, allowing the project to continue moving forward into 2026 if needed.
Meeting a park need
Sherod Park is one of Vermilion’s busiest public spaces, drawing families, walkers and lakefront visitors throughout the year. The addition of permanent restroom facilities addresses a long-standing need at the park.
The project is also part of the city’s broader push to improve public park amenities, with other upgrades underway or planned at parks across Vermilion.
