VERMILION — Vermilion High School celebrated 133 graduates during commencement exercises at 1 p.m. May 31 in the high school gymnasium.

Principal Andrew Perry told graduates the day was about more than finishing high school.

“Today is a celebration of achievement, perseverance and possibility,” Perry said. “But more than anything else, today is about new beginnings.”

Perry encouraged students to move forward with confidence, even when the future feels uncertain.

“Do not be afraid of what lies ahead,” Perry said. “Walk toward it with courage.”

Class president Reese Holland encouraged classmates to slow down and appreciate the moments they are living through before they become memories.

“We spent so much time saying, ‘I can’t wait,’ but we didn’t always stop to appreciate what was right in front of us,” Holland said.

Brooke Whisenant, who was recognized among the class’s top 10 students, also addressed the class, encouraging graduates not to let fear or hesitation keep them from living fully.

“I wish I spent less time being afraid of life,” Whisenant said.

She urged classmates not to put off the people and experiences that matter.

“Don’t wait to tell that girl or guy that you love them,” Whisenant said. “Don’t wait to go on that vacation you and your friends have been planning.”

Whisenant also reminded graduates to value more than material success.

“Be aware of the fact that some of the most valuable things in your life aren’t material possessions,” she said.

The ceremony concluded with graduates moving their tassels and singing the Vermilion High School alma mater. Afterward, graduates gathered outside for the traditional cap toss.
