More improvements planned for Showse Park

Board advances pavilion, trail and court projects

VERMILION — A new pavilion, expanded walking trails and renovated sports courts are among the improvements taking shape at Showse Park, where city officials continue working on a long-term effort to upgrade the recreational facilities.

The Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board approved $9,000 for preliminary engineering and design work on a proposed pavilion during its Oct. 20 meeting.

The pavilion could provide space for community events, performances, markets and private gatherings, according to plans presented to the board.

Parks operations director Marc Weisenberger said the design work would help establish the size, layout and estimated construction cost before additional decisions are made.

A conceptual drawing presented during the meeting showed a covered structure with a stage and space for storing tables and chairs.

The design incorporates elements intended to complement the park’s existing improvements, including its Native American-inspired features.

Officials said the pavilion could also provide additional programming opportunities for the Parks and Recreation Department.

The board’s approval covers design work only. Construction funding and a timeline have not been established.

Sports courts moving forward

Work on the next phase of Showse Park’s sports complex is also progressing following delays in the city’s approval process.

City Council president Jeff Lucas told the board that the project has been divided into two stages to accommodate the construction schedule.

The first would involve replacing the deteriorating asphalt surface before asphalt plants close for the winter, if weather and contractor availability permit.

Additional work, including surface finishing, painting, striping and fencing, is planned for spring.

Officials decided to replace the existing court surface rather than repair widespread cracks, concluding that the more extensive work would provide a longer-lasting result.

Weisenberger said the replacement option would cost approximately $20,000 more than repairs.

The project is supported by a $150,000 contribution and additional city funding.

Trails and public art

Elsewhere in the park, crews have added approximately 425 feet to the walking trail, creating a shorter loop for visitors who do not want to walk the entire route.

The board also approved $10,000 to complete surface improvements using compacted asphalt millings.

The expanded trail includes a series of educational storyboards, with nine of 15 installed at the time of the meeting.

Additional landscaping has been completed, including trees planted near the trail and storyboard locations to provide shade as they mature.

A new fish sculpture has also been installed, with safety surfacing completed around it.

Officials said the artwork complements the colors and design of nearby playground equipment and other park features.

Additional signs recognizing the park’s heritage and community contributions are being prepared, with a dedication planned once the remaining installations are completed.

The projects are part of a broader effort to expand recreational opportunities at Showse Park for children, families and adults.
