Robinson Family Soaps Expands to Vermilion: A Story of Resilience, Community, and Handmade Care

What started as a mother’s mission to ease her family’s pain has grown into a thriving business with a deeply personal story. Mary Robinson, founder of Robinson Family Soaps, began making handmade skincare products in 2020 after watching her husband and nephew, Jayden, struggle with Ichthyosis, a genetic skin condition that causes dry, scaly patches. While the medical lotions burned their skin, the emotional toll on Jayden was just as painful—he faced relentless bullying at school because of his appearance.

Determined to help, Robinson researched natural ingredients that could soothe his skin without irritation. After months of trial and error, she created a lotion specifically for Jayden and let him choose its name, scent, and color. He called it Jayden’s Wish, because his biggest hope was for the bullying to stop. That product became the foundation of Robinson Family Soaps, which quickly gained a following for its affordable, skin-friendly handmade soaps, lotions, and skincare products.

Over the past four years, Robinson has expanded her business, first selling online and at a small storefront in Sheffield Lake, where she also featured handmade goods from other artisans. Now, she’s preparing for the next big step—opening a new store in Vermilion.

A New Home in Vermilion

On March 1, 2025, Robinson Family Soaps & Gifts will open at 3249 Liberty Ave., the former site of Miss Kitty’s Bakery. But this store will be more than just a soap shop—it will house products from 40 different artisans, including candles, home décor, baked goods, jewelry, and more. Robinson is passionate about supporting fellow makers, and her shop will showcase the talents of local and national small businesses.

The grand opening will be a family-friendly event, featuring a special guest: Bluey, the beloved children’s character. Families are encouraged to come celebrate, shop, and learn more about Robinson’s mission.

More Than a Business—A Purpose

For Robinson, this business is about more than just selling products—it’s about creating something meaningful from hardship. She survived a traumatic experience in 2012 that changed the course of her life, preventing her from pursuing her original career goal of becoming a lawyer. Instead, she found purpose in helping others, starting with her family and growing into a company that improves the lives of people with sensitive skin.

Today, Robinson runs the business with the support of her husband and children, who help with everything from making products to designing labels. She also teaches soap-making classes to share her passion with the community.

With the Vermilion expansion, Robinson hopes to reach even more people looking for high-quality, handmade skincare—and to remind others that, even in the face of adversity, resilience and kindness can create something truly special.
