Vermilion City Council Opens 2026 With Board Appointments and Weighs Rule Changes Ahead

Vermilion City Council held its first regular meeting of the year on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Vermilion Municipal Court Complex. Council President Jeff Lucas called the meeting to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call. One piece of correspondence was entered into the record, outlining the mayor’s recommended appointments and reappointments to several city boards and commissions.

Council members provided brief committee updates, including upcoming meetings for Planning Commission, Parks & Recreation, Historic Design & Review, Port Authority, the Board of Zoning Appeals and Streets, Buildings and Grounds. No old business appeared on the agenda.

During new business, council discussed whether to formally adopt Robert’s Rules of Order as part of the 2026–2027 Rules & Regulations. The proposal generated initial debate, particularly around how certain procedural rules would function in local practice. The motion was ultimately withdrawn and will be taken up again during the January 12 Legislative Committee meeting.

Council then voted to enter executive session to discuss personnel matters related to hiring. After returning to open session, members approved several of the mayor’s board and commission appointments for new terms, including appointments to the Parks & Recreation Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Residents who wish to review the meeting in full can watch the complete video and read the official agenda and minutes, all of which are linked below for public reference.
