From Online Brand to Main Street, Vermilion Business Owner Builds Regional Success

VERMILION — Step inside Main Street Threads on Main Street and one of the first things that stands out is a patriotic display built around America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Red, white and blue apparel, locally designed graphics and a growing line of products set the tone for a shop that is rooted not just in retail, but in creativity and community.

Behind it all is owner Jacqui Adkins, who operates both Main Street Threads and the apparel brand Mistakes on the Lake. While the storefront offers a welcoming downtown shopping experience, the work behind the scenes extends far beyond the racks.

Two Brands, One Local Vision

Main Street Threads serves as the retail hub, while Mistakes on the Lake has grown into a larger apparel brand with products now carried in more than 150 stores. The two operate side by side, sharing designs, products and a local identity. Many of those items are produced through Adkins’ own fulfillment operation, where orders are designed, printed and shipped locally.

Both brands also maintain their own online stores, expanding their reach beyond Vermilion. Since opening, Main Street Threads has also been recognized multiple times as “Best Boutique” and “Best Local Apparel Shop” for Lorain and Erie counties.

Designed and Made Locally

What sets the business apart is how much of the work is done in-house. Adkins and her team design and produce the majority of what is sold, offering sizes ranging from newborn to 4XL for men, women and children.

Customers can also request custom pieces, choosing their preferred size, style or color.

It’s a different model from the typical boutique, where products are often sourced from outside vendors. At Main Street Threads, much of what customers see has been created locally, giving the store a more personal and flexible approach.

A Shop Built for Families, Pets and Browsing

That same approach carries over into the in-store experience. The shop is dog-friendly, complete with treats for visiting pets and a “Paws of Fame” wall featuring photos of four-legged customers.

For families, an interactive chalkboard wall gives kids a place to draw while parents browse

Customer Service Beyond the Sale

Adkins has also built the space around a customer-first mindset. Inside the store, a display of business cards highlights other local shops, and she is quick to point customers in the right direction even if it means sending them elsewhere.

“If we don’t have it, we’ll help you find it,” is the attitude that guides the approach, reinforcing a focus on service over sales.

Giving Back to the Community

Giving back is another piece of the business. A line of patriotic “Liberty” shirts supports Flags on Liberty, with a portion of each sale going toward the local effort.

Adkins is also active in the community as vice president of Kiwanis, helping with events that benefit children, and serves as a member of the Public Art Board.

Vermilion Pride and Regional Creativity

Inside the shop, a dedicated Vermilion section features locally inspired items including stickers, keychains, apparel and gifts.

The store also leans into regional creativity, with products like a Jobu-inspired candle, a nod to the Cleveland-based movie Major League.

From Social Media to Main Street

The path to opening the storefront began several years earlier. Mistakes on the Lake started as a social media concept before becoming a full business in 2017. As demand grew, Adkins opened a fulfillment center in 2021 to handle production and shipping, followed by the launch of Main Street Threads in 2022.

Today, the business continues to expand, including a growing product line that now reaches into the hundreds of items and seasonal collections like the America 250 display currently featured in the store.

At its core, Main Street Threads is more than a place to shop. It reflects a locally built business that blends design, production and community involvement, while creating a space where customers, families and even their pets feel welcome.
