VERMILION — The Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board is taking steps to expand programming across the city, including plans to hire a new Recreation and Aquatics Director.
Board members recently approved moving the proposal forward to Vermilion City Council, where the position will require formal approval before it can be posted and filled.
The role is expected to be a part-time salaried position focused on growing recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
Focus on expanding programs beyond youth sports
Board discussion highlighted a broader goal of expanding programming beyond traditional youth sports.
As Chair Tina Swinehart explained, the effort is aimed at “…to expand our recreation to include all age groups in the community and not just sports but other activities from seniors down to toddlers.”
Members said the position would help develop activities for a wider range of residents, including seniors, while building on existing offerings already in place.
The idea has been under discussion for several years, with board members reviewing past notes and exploring ways to improve recreation access across the community.
Transition in how the role is structured
The position would also mark a shift from the current recreation structure.
During the April meeting, Swinehart said current Recreation Director Chad Kuhns is unable to take on the expanded role because he has another full-time job, meaning the new position would be filled by someone else.
Part of a larger parks expansion effort
The proposed position comes as the city continues to invest in its parks system, including ongoing improvements at Showse Park and other locations.
Board members said expanding programming is a natural next step as park facilities continue to grow and attract more daily use.
Next steps move to City Council
Before the position can be created, the proposal must go through the City Council process, including multiple readings.
If approved, the board said it hopes to move forward with hiring later this year.
